I genuinely think it got as much hate as it did because of the fact that a lot of older generation COD players had a lot of expectations for the game, especially after the release COD World at War. Many people wanted cod WW2 to live up to, or even exceed their expectations comparison wise to World at War.
by default, the game is installed at; Program Files (x86) / Steam / steamapps / common / Call of Duty World at War. - you should also verify integrity of game files on steam, in case of any missing or corrupt files are leading to this problem. to do that; right click at WaW on steam library and select "properties". there go to "local files" tab
